'Royte pomerantsn': Its Humor, History and Language

This is a live, online course held on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 25 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, recordings of class sessions, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish, and any readings will be in Yiddish.

The collection of Yiddish jokes best known as Royte pomerantsn was compiled by Yiddish folklorist and Renaissance man Immanuel Olshvanger a bit over a century ago. It has been re-issued numerous times, for a variety of audiences, across several eras, in three countries and on two continents.

It was printed in dialect—not in literary Yiddish, not even in the Yiddish alphabet—by publishers not accustomed to issuing Yiddish-language works. Yet it is an authentic and extremely reliable reflection of Yiddish language and lore. In this mini-course we will review the history of the book's compilation and publication, enjoy some of its better and its lesser known jokes, discuss what can be learned from it about spoken Yiddish and about the specific dialect in which it's presented, and review how the collection has been used by others. Towards the eternal attempt to characterize Yiddish humor, we will discuss the motifs that are joked about and Olshvanger's theory of what is essential to the Yiddish joke.

Yiddish Level:
This class is recommended for those with a high-intermediate to advanced level of Yiddish language facility. It is appropriate for those who have taken the equivalent of level Daled or above in the YIVO Summer Program. It is also appropriate for those who completed Intermediate IV Yiddish, Intensive Intermediate III&IV Yiddish, or above in fall 2021.

Dovid (David) Braun has taught all levels of Yiddish language at YIVO's intensive summer program since 1990 at Columbia University and New York University. He initiated and taught in the intensive summer programs of the Yiddish Book Center (Amherst, MA) and Jewish Historical Institute (Warsaw, Poland). He has taught Yiddish language, Yiddish linguistics, and/or general linguistics as a faculty member of Harvard University, University of Pennsylvania, and the Hebrew University of Jerusalem, and he regularly participates in varied research projects involving Yiddish language and culture. He serves as co-president of the Sholem Aleichem Cultural Center (Bronx, NY) which is now the only NYC area venue where public Yiddish cultural events are held on a regular basis.
