This course will explore the life, death, and afterlife of Jewish Vilna during the fateful years 1939-1949. Topics will include: Vilna as a safe-haven from the Nazis (1939-1941), the Vilna ghetto and the extermination of Vilna Jewry, Jewish culture and creativity in the ghetto (including the poetry of Abraham Sutzkever and others), the looting and rescue of Jewish cultural treasures, the rise and fall of Jewish life in Soviet Vilnius, and the perpetuation of Vilna's memory in literature and public life (Chaim Grade, Abba Kovner, YIVO, the associations of Vilners in America and Israel).
