This is a live, online course held weekly on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish and English.

Who should take this course?
This course is for those who have previously taken two semesters of Yiddish. It is appropriate for those who took Intensive Beginner I&II Yiddish in fall 2022.

What topics will this class cover?
In this course, students will continue to build on the content and skills acquired in Intensive Beginner I&II Yiddish and in Beginner II Yiddish. New content from chapters 7 – 13 of In eynem will include family, professions and pastimes, physical appearance, food and setting the table. Grammar will introduce adjectives and possessive adjectives, nominative adjective endings, the verb “to like,” the accusative and grammatical gender, accusative pronouns, position verbs and basic prepositions, the dative and contractions. In addition, songs and material related to the Jewish holidays will be presented.

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Course Materials:
This course will use the textbook In eynem: The New Yiddish Textbook, Vol I & II by Asya Vaisman Schulman, Jordan Brown, and Mikhl Yashinsky (Purchase).

Perl (Paula) Teitelbaum was born and raised in a Yiddish-speaking home in post-war Wroclaw. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, Paula became actively involved in New York City’s Yiddish-speaking circles. During her professional career Paula has taught Yiddish as well as Spanish and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) in a variety of settings, including college, and pre-K through high school and adult education classes. Using her TESOL background Paula has applied some of the most successful teaching methods into her Yiddish classes.
