The makeup session on Sunday, June 11 will be held at the Jewish Theological Seminary Library.


This class meets weekly in person at the YIVO Institute for Jewish Research in New York City. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website.

Who should take this course?
This course is for those who have previously taken one semester of Yiddish. It is appropriate for those who took Beginner I Yiddish in fall 2022.

What topics will this class cover?
The class will be taught using the communicative approach, with each session built around a particular topic, the main themes of which will be daily life and Yiddish culture. The aim will be to build on the students’ existing knowledge to greater improve their comprehension as well as written and oral communication skills. We will use a mixture of reading, writing and oral exercises, as well as games and songs to build vocabulary.

Is knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet required?
Yes, knowledge of the Yiddish alphabet is required.

Course Materials:
It is highly recommended that students purchase the textbook In eynem: The New Yiddish Textbook, Vol I & II by Asya Vaisman Schulman, Jordan Brown, and Mikhl Yashinsky (Purchase). All required materials will be provided by the instructor digitally throughout the class on Canvas.

Annabel (Annie) Cohen is a third year PhD Student in Modern Jewish History at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, focusing on the interwar Jewish anti-fascist left. She has a Research Masters in History with distinction from the University of London. Before moving to New York to undertake her PhD, she spent 18 months in the Paris Yiddish Center’s Yiddish Immersion Program. She is also an alumna of the YIVO Summer Program. Since 2020, Annie has been teaching Yiddish for the London-based language school Babels Blessing. She has also taught at Yiddish Summer Weimar, at KlezKanada as one of the 2022 Freed Fellows, and is one of this years’ Yiddish Book Center’s Yiddish Pedagogy Fellows.
