This is a live, online course held weekly on Zoom. Enrollment will be capped at about 15 students. All course details (Zoom link, syllabus, handouts, assignments, etc.) will be posted to Canvas. Students will be granted access to the class on Canvas after registering for the class here on the YIVO website. This class will be conducted in Yiddish.

Who should take this course?
This course is for those who took Intensive Intermediate I&II Yiddish in fall 2021, or those who have studied through Lesson 14B in Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume II by Sheva Zucker.

What topics will this class cover?
This course will further expand listening, speaking reading and writing in a cultural context. The class will start at about Lesson 15A in Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume II by Sheva Zucker. Grammar topics will include Present Participle, Verbs with Zikh, Complemented Verbs with Zikh, and Periphrastic Verbs.

Course Materials:
This course will use Yiddish: An Introduction to the Language, Literature & Culture, Volume II by Sheva Zucker (Purchase). The audio and answer key for the textbooks are highly recommended and may be purchased directly from Sheva Zucker. In addition, supplementary stories, articles, and songs will be used and provided digitally by the instructor throughout the class on Canvas.

Perl (Paula) Teitelbaum was born and raised in a Yiddish-speaking home in post-war Wroclaw. After immigrating to the United States in 1967, Paula became actively involved in New York City’s Yiddish-speaking circles. During her professional career Paula has taught Yiddish as well as Spanish and English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESL) in a variety of settings, including college, and pre-K through high school and adult education classes. Using her TESOL background Paula has applied some of the most successful teaching methods into her Yiddish classes.
